An intrusion detection system consists of:
- Motion Detectors: Placed in every room and/or main areas, in order to perceive any movement.
- Magnetic Contacts: Placed in every door and window to secure any breach.
- Keypad/Touchscreen: User interface with the system, placed close to the entrance, used to enable/disable the system, among others.
- Sounders/Flashers: Turned on automatically in case of breach.
- Main Unit: The heart of the system, controlling all signals from the aforementioned parts.

The system can also either provide capabilities of home automation control, or be integrated with other, bigger automation systems.
